My Secret to Intermittent Fasting: Drugs, the Legal Kind

Intermittent Fasting

Sometimes I wake up and remember I’m pregnant for the 4th time in 4 years and decide not waking up sounds pretty awesome. BUT then….

{I like big buts and I cannot lie}

I remember….coffee!

Coffee and Intermittent Fasting

I’m always looking for ways to tweak my diet so that I have as few pounds as possible to lose after the good ol’ gestation party.

One of my latest experiments is intermittent fasting, which was prompted after doing lots of reading over here {thank you pregnancy insomnia}.

The basic gist is that you put off eating your first meal until later in the day. According to this guy skipping breakfast allows growth hormone levels to rise, which helps preserve muscle mass and shifts metabolism into fat-burning mode. Frankly, I know zero about the science of all that jazz, but what I do know is that I have about 1,500 – 1,800 calories to play with throughout the day to keep from gaining too much weight while pregnant {Disclaimer: This is totally different for every woman. This just happens to be my sweet spot that I’ve learned through much trial and error.}

And when I “save” more of those calories for later in the day, I sleep better. I like being able to “spend” more calories on dinner, and looking forward to a “treat” at the end of the day, helps me get in those lower-calorie, high-volume foods, like fruits and vegetables.

One of my “hacks” to get through that early morning fasting window is to sip on my favorite drug of choice, caffeine of course. It blunts my hunger and apparently can save your life????

So whether you buy into any of the above or prefer to leave it altogether {or feel free to mix and match it up!}, if you’re a coffee-drinker, you’ll want to keep reading.

Or not. I’ll never know.

Caffeine + Convenience = Happy Mama

You guys: no joke, I might have done a fist pump when I opened my front door to a beautiful cardboard box bearing my very first Keurig (it’s a 2.0 K200), courtesy of @influenster.

Well start with the bad?

I know usingIntermittent Fasting #HelloKeurgi a Keurig will mean we’ll pay a little extra for the convenience. The price of K-cups are um, not in our usual range for zee grocery budget. BUT – I’m keeping in mind that we’re not just paying for the coffee but the convenience. And I also like that we can buy the Members Mark brand K-cups from Sam’s Club. And…..well…..that’s all the justifications she wrote……..

We haven’t introduced a Keurig to our coffee game up to this point for a couple reasons. One, the hubby and I both enjoy a cup or two, so brewing coffee one. cup. at. a. time. seemed ridiculous in light of the fact that leaving the house with three toddlers is an hour-long production. No joke. BUT! This guy can not only brew a single cup but can also brew a four-cup carafe (appreciated!).

It literally takes 15 seconds to brew. You just pop a k-cup into the machine, select one of the brew buttons, and you’re done. No having to clean out coffee grinders, no having to wait, no having to deal with espresso nonsense. Pop the used k-cup out and you’re done. No fuss, no muss, said 1960’s Brooke….

So, complaint number one checked off!

Roadblock number 2 to us taking the Keurig leap, we try to steer clear of appliances that take up counter space because toaster + blender + coffee maker + bean grinder + crockpot (enough! enough!) = no counter space to set children in Bumbo’s on (I kid, I kid, we do not set our children on high places in tip-able contraptions!).

Intermittent Fasting #HelloKeurigBUT! The K200 series is narrower and deeper than previous models and it fit quite nicely on our limited counter space.

I also love the dial to select the serving size in 1/2 ounce increments and it lets me set coffee strength.

But enough from me, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comment section below.

Have you tried intermittent fasting?
